Arthur Weasley is the husband of Molly and father of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny Weasley. Arthur is a loving father and husband, although he tends to be a bit indulgent with his children. His naturally easy-going attitude and his eccentric ways can get him in trouble with his wife and he can be a bit henpecked at times. The fact of the matter is that he actually deserves most of what he gets, since he does things behind Molly's back like enchant a car to fly even when doing so violates his own Muggle Protection Act. Arthur is not particularly responsible when it comes to money, either; when Molly was worrying about how they would afford all the school books they needed, for example, Arthur insisted on taking Mr. and Mrs. Granger over to the Leaky Cauldron for a drink. This has to drive Molly to distraction at times. But their marriage is strong and their family, though poor, is held together by bonds of love.

Arthur works for the Ministry of Magic in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office. He works with an old warlock named Perkins (CS3, OP7). Arthur's job sometimes calls for him to work nights, participating in raids that bring in illegally enchanted items (CS3). For example, magic carpets are banned in Britain, since they are classified as enchanted Muggle artifacts by the Registry of Proscribed Charmable Objects (GF7).

Arthur Weasley's office is located on level six of the Ministry of Magic's London headquarters, since it is a small part of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. It's a small office, not much bigger than the two desks (Arthur's and Perkins') and bulging file cabinets that fill it (OP7). He is not particularly high up in the Ministry, but he is well respected. Arthur is the author of the Muggle Protection Act, an important law of the Ministry of Magic (CS).

Arthur is enthralled by anything having to do with Muggles. Some have suggested that his fondness for Muggles has held him back from promotion at the Ministry. Arthur is very interested in artifacts of Muggle technology. He buys Muggle things and then takes them apart in his shed, trying to figure out how they work, and sometimes enchanting them. For a while he had an old Ford Anglia which he had bewitched so that it could fly, but it's gone missing. Interestingly, this wasn't in violation of the Muggle Protection Act because of a loophole in the law. He collects plugs and batteries. He loves to ply Harry with questions about how everything from bus stops to escalators work. When he encountered the Grangers in Gringotts, he insisted on taking them into the Leaky Cauldron for a drink so he could find out all about them. While camping, he insisted on putting up the tents without magic and spent a half hour trying to figure out how to start a fire with matches.

Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic, treated Arthur with friendship and respect until the summer of 1995, when Fudge started suspecting anyone friendly with Dumbledore to be an enemy. Until that time, Arthur was well-regarded by most in the Ministry, including Department heads like Ludo Bagman, Barty Crouch, and Amelia Bones. Many Ministry witches and wizards recognize him on sight and feel comfortable chatting with him, indicating that he is well-liked. Arthur is a close friend and a strong supporter of Albus Dumbledore. He is also friends with Mad-Eye Moody and is on cordial terms with Amos Diggory, whose family lives fairly near Ottery St. Catchpole as well. However, Arthur has very little respect for Lucius Malfoy, whose prejudiced attitudes and connection with the Dark Arts are complete opposites of everything the Weasleys stand for. The two men have come to blows on occasion and when they meet they are barely able to conceal their contempt for each other.

After the falling out between Dumbledore and Fudge, which happened in June of 1995, Arthur Weasley became a member of the Order of the Phoenix, working against Voldemort in secret, lest Fudge suspect them of working against the Ministry. During one evening of standing guard over the entrance to the Department of Mysteries, which Voldemort was trying to break into, Arthur was attacked by a giant snake and bitten severely. He was transported to St. Mungo's and spent some time there recovering.

Arthur has thinning red hair with a bald patch; he is tall and thin and wears glasses. He normally wears long robes, although when trying to pass as a Muggle he has worn jeans and a sweater (GF6) and pinstriped pants with an old bomber jacket (OP7).

Arthur attended Hogwarts many years ago (the dates are uncertain, but it was before 1970 and possibly as long ago as the 1930s) and was in Gryffindor. He and Molly were courting while at Hogwarts, and they occasionally snuck out for a moonlight stroll. Once Arthur and Molly were caught by the caretaker, Apollyon Pringle, who punished Arthur so severely that he still has the marks.

Arthur Weasley is a pure-blood wizard, as is his wife. His family is connected to the other pure-blood families, but he is considered a "blood traitor" since he does not share their fanatic devotion to maintaining pure wizarding blood. Arthur is second cousin once removed to Sirius Black and also related to the Malfoys (OP6).
